Abstract: Layered architecture based on the ISO/OSI reference model has a fundamental importance for an easy design in the case of traditional wired networks. On the other hand, this structure has a great limitations for the multimedia applications. The main reasons refers to a varied demands for QoS (Quality of Service), which can not be satisfied relying on the traditional architecture of a standardized network protocols.

Designing of Cross-layer protocols can be defined as a process which has been done by rejecting layered OSI communication protocol architecture – open systems connectivity, and includes the creation of a new interfaces between the layers. In this way, it is redefined the new boundaries between the layers of the OSI architecture and communication protocol. The design of the new protocol is such that it depends on the protocols of other layers, which means you are need to adjust the parameters associated with other layers or protocols in their environment.

In this paper, it would be indicated the main possibilities and effects of using cross-layer protocols in the next generation mobile networks: mobile ad hoc wireless multimedia networks, 3G/4G Univesal Mobile Telecommunication Systems (UMTS), wireless access networks, wireless sensor networks, planetary satellite multimedia networks and mobile multi-hop multimedia networ.

Key words: cross-layer protocols,  mobile networks, multimedia communications, applications of cross-layer protocols,  Quality of Service - QoS.
